Chapter 22 – Tracey

I couldn’t believe that I had been left there at the restaurant. Just to think of being stood up by my own husband was enough to send me over the top. Leaving that restaurant, I was steaming mad and all I could think about was what I would do to Marlon when I saw him. There was no excuse he could possibly render for not showing and not even bothering to call me. On the drive home, I didn’t even pay attention to stop signs, yellow lights, or even listen to the radio. I just kept driving towards my destination.

When I pulled up in front of the house, I saw an ambulance rush past me but I thought nothing of it. My focus was on running up the stairs to give Marlon a piece of my mind. There was a group of people standing in front of the store and looking at in shock, but I brushed right past them. I could here people whispering about what was obviously happening, but I didn’t care what they were talking about. I walked by the store door that stood wide open and to the door that led to my apartment. I ran up the stairs and opened the door.

When I went to put my key in the door, I immediately realized that maybe something serious had just happened. I began to get nervous. My door was slightly open, as if someone had gone in without closing it all the way. Perhaps a burglary had taken place. Then there was the ambulance that I passed which was now gone, but I could still hear the sirens in the distance. I reached for the door and knocked, slowly fearing what I might find when I walked into my house. I didn’t see anything out of place when I walked in, so I called out to Marlon to see if he was there. He didn’t answer, so I went from room to room to look for him. There were no signs of anything being out of order yet, and Marlon was not there.

Not able to find Marlon anywhere, I ran downstairs to the store to see if my grandparents knew anything. I walked into the store and saw the workers all in an uproar. They were standing around and talking, some holding their chest in disbelief. I was unclear about what was going on. Had Marlon been attacked and rushed to the hospital? I called out to my Grandfather, but he never answered. Chris, one of the store clerks that worked during the day, walked up to me and put his arms around me. I guess he assumed that I knew what was going on. I was standing there thinking the worst about Marlon. I didn’t know what to say or how to even ask what was happening.

“It’s going to be all right, Tracey,” Chris said, hugging me as if to encourage me.

Just then, I saw Marlon come from around the counter as if he was bent over.
